Back in September of 2005 I wrote an entry on Microsoft's confused and self-destructive position regarding Mono, the open-source implementation of a .NET runtime/C# compiler. It is great to see that Microsoft has cleared the air, likely in reply to some recent comments by Richard Stallman.

However you feel about Stallman, he should be thanked for eliciting this position declaration and finally helping to legitimize Mono. .NET / C# developers should rejoice at this development.

I must say I can't see how that statement clears the air. It only appears to cover the ECMA subset of the .NET Framework, and I can't imagine developing apps without some of the rest of the framework (e.g. ADO.NET).

Hi there Joe.

You are absolutely right, however limiting yourself to the base CLR/IL and related technologies still provides tremendous opportunity for cross-platform development, all without touching the greater .NET framework. There are robust and full featured open-source libraries for virtually any type of data access, GUI work, and so on, so the gap has been identified and largely filled.
